Pledge to Vote “No” on
Question 6.
Question 6 on the October 19 referendum asks whether the Government of Alberta should advocate for an amendment to the Constitution of Canada to remove the federal government’s historical responsibility to appoint judges of the superior courts of the provinces.
This question is part of a broader attack on the judiciary and the fundamental rights and freedoms they protect. If you believe that the Rule of Law is important, vote NO on Question #6.
Why Vote “No” to Question 6?
Independent judges protect everyone
Judges must be free and independent to make decisions, to protect the vulnerable, and to hold powerful people and governments to account. Politicians who baselessly attack judges and undermine their decisions threaten an institution that protects all of us.
Federally appointed judges are Albertans
All judges serving in Alberta were first members of Alberta’s legal community. They understand the local communities in which they practiced, and later work as judges. They are selected by a committee made up entirely of Albertans, based on merit and quality, not political affiliation.
Politics has no place in the courts
Canada’s courts do not have “liberal” or “conservative” judges like in the United States. Canada has a strong tradition of a non-partisan judiciary, which has no difficulty ruling against the governments that appoint them.
